MullenLowe’s Tom Knox has been appointed chairman of the History of Advertising Trust.

Knox, who is already a trustee of HAT, succeeds Geoff Russell, who has stepped down after five years. Russell was formerly media affairs director at the IPA.

Knox is executive partner at MullenLowe Group as well as its former chairman. From 2015 to 2017 he was president of the IPA. During his tenure, he launched an initiative to diversify agency management teams to include more women and people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Talking about his vision for HAT, Knox said: “In addition to raising HAT’s profile and helping to shore up our finances, I’d very much like our group of trustees to be more diverse and inclusive.”

HAT is hoping Knox’s experience will give it “extra leverage not only with agencies but also with their clients”.

Knox was head of MullenLowe’s Department of Health business during the pandemic and the organisation is hoping to use his healthcare experience to bolster its Ad Memoire programme. The initiative uses famous ads from the 50s and 60s to help improve the lives of those with dementia and in care homes.

Russell said: “One of the reasons I invited Tom to take over is that he’s calm, thoughtful and very bright but also has the kind of determination HAT will need in going forward.

“At the same time, maintaining and broadening HAT’s profile within the marcoms industry is done better by a practising adperson.”

John Gordon-Saker, HAT’s director, said that working with Russell had been an “absolute joy”.
